Promoting British Values
The DfE have reinforced the need ‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’
At Wolverton Primary Schoolwe aim for our children to become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background. We promote the basic British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs in the following ways:
We have a number of democratically voted for pupil roles within the school.
The positions of Head Boy and Head Girl as well as those of Deputy Head Boy/Girl and House Captains are voted for by the whole school following the children’s presentation of their manifestos.
We have a School Council with members from year groups 1 to 6 who are voted into their posts by their peers. The School Council meets regularly to share the children’s views and ideas on a range of school issues and to help make decisions. Council members collect the views of their peers which they bring to meetings for discussion and they also provide feedback to their classes.
We also have regular House Meetings where all members of the school have the opportunity to express their views and make suggestions.
The Rule of Law
Children are taught about the‘5 Rs’ – respect, reasoning, resilience, resourcefulness and responsibility – which represent the shared values of the school, in assembly and PHSE. Through the ‘Class dojo’ system in KS1 and KS2 the children are are encouraged to appreciate the responsibility that keeping the ‘5 R’s’ involves and recognise that there are sanctions when rules are broken.
Each class also agrees its own class rules at the beginning of the academic year.
Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Making choices is key part of the school vision, which children learn about through assemblies and PHSE work. Through our work we discuss different choices that the children can make and encourage them to make the right choices. We look at e-safety as a key part of the computing curriculum and the importance of making safe choices when online.
Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. We are an inclusive school where everyone is valued and has a contribution to make. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. The children and staff often work with other schools in our cluster which develops their respect for others in the wider community.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
All different faiths and beliefs are explored and celebrated through assemblies, RE lessons and a variety of opportunities provided by off-site visits and guests who are invited into school. The children are taught that people have different faiths and beliefs and that these should be accepted. Children within our school with different faiths are encouraged to share their practices and special celebrations.
