The school uses ‘‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ to support the teaching of phonics.  Little Wandle is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. It is based on the original Letters and Sounds, but extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme meeting all the expectations of the National Curriculum, the Ofsted Deep Dive into reading and preparing the children to go beyond the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check.

Our aim is to develop the children’s phonological awareness, their ability to segment and blend words and read tricky words on sight in order to become fluent readers. Daily phonics sessions are delivered in the Reception and Key Stage 1 classes. Teacher use a range of both practical and online resources from the ‘Little Wandle’ programme to promote pupil engagement.

National Phonic Screening

All children in Year 1 are screened using the National Assessment materials in the summer term. If the children in Year 1 do not reach the required standard they will be retested when they are in Year 2.

At Wolverton Primary School, we use Jigsaw PSHE to teach Personal, Social, Health Education and Relationships Education (PHSE & RE). The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work for pupils from Reception to Year 6. It integrates PSHE, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a whole-school approach and addresses relationship and health education themes in a way that is appropriate to the age and stage of the a pupil’s development through the following units: ‘Healthy Me’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’.

Jigsaw PSHE is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships & Health Education Guidance.  Please refer toJigsaw – Relationships Education, Health Education and Sex Education in the Primary School Parent and Carers Information sheet for any further information.

Jigsaw also contributes to the British Values agenda, both through the direct teaching of information and via experiential learning experience provided for the children. The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle (unit) and every Piece (lesson). Links are also made to the Jigsaw Themes and British Values through our school assemblies.
