The Reception class provides a warm, caring and stimulating environment. Every child is encouraged to work and play in a wide range of activities that are designed to promote early literacy, numeracy, social, physical and creative development. Children can start school in the autumn term following their fourth birthday.
It is helpful if parents prepare children for school by teaching them to dress and undress and to use the toilet correctly.
It is also helpful if parents give their child the opportunity to talk about what he or she sees in pictures and to enjoy stories and rhymes. Parents can help their child to recognise their name when printed eg. “Ben” not “BEN”, to hold a pencil correctly in whichever hand is preferred, to learn the basic colour names, and to count to five. These are important stepping-stones in the pathway to reading and writing. We will build on these skills when your child starts school.
